Edouard Machery (Pittsburgh): Dogmatism and Parochialism

Zum Vortrag:

In this talk (based on chapter 4 of Philosophy Within Its Proper Bounds) I describe the method of cases - a prominent method in much of philosophy - and I present two arguments based on experimental - philosophy findings that undermine its use in philosophy: Dogmatism and Parochialism.

Zum Sprecher:

Eduard Machery is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh. As a philosopher of science he is working primarily on the philosophical issues raised by cognitive science and neuroscience. He is also involved in the development of experimental philosophy, doing empirical research on moral psychology, semantics, and folk epistemology, often with a cross-cultural focus. - In the last years his career brought him to Korea Institute for Advanced Studies (2013), Washington University in St. Louis (2015) and the University of Edinburgh and Tsinghua University, Peking (2017). He has been awarded a Humboldt Research Award at the Ruhr-University in Bochum and a Mercator fellowship.
