Forschungsseminar Theoretische Philosophie Aus den Instituten

Im Rahmen des Forschungsseminars laden wir recht herzlich ein zum Vortrag:

Dr. Corina Strößner (Univ. Düsseldorf) - Frames and Conceptual Spaces

Abstract

Frames as recursive attribute-value structures (Barsalou 1992) on the one hand and geometrically restricted areas in Conceptual Spaces (Gärdenfors 2000) on the other hand are two different ways to represent conceptual content. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the two approaches? How do they relate to each other?

In the first part of the talk I will argue that conceptual spaces are not able and not even meant to replace frame representations. However, they can be a very useful extension of frames. The second part provides preliminaries to the implementation of geometrical structures to graph theoretic elaborations of frames as provided by Petersen (2007) and Kornmesser (2016).

Speaker

Corina Strößner received her PhD with a study on statistical and non-statistical semantics of normality statements. As a Post Doc her research interests shifted to the study of concepts and conceptual change. Since 2016, she is research fellow at the DCLPS and works on the subproject “Frame representations of prototype concepts and prototype-based reasoning” in the CRC 991: The Structure of Representations in Language, Cognition, and Science.
