Helen Beebee (Manchester)
"Alternative possibilities and blameworthiness"

Some standard incompatibilist responses to Frankfurt’s alleged refutation of PAP are really only defences of the claim that blameworthiness requires alternative possibilities (APs), and not of the claim that acting freely requires APs. (In particular: Copp’s ‘ought implies can’ defence, Widerker’s ‘W-defence’, and the flicker defence.) Considered in this light, these defences really aren’t bad – and in particular the flicker defence is in much better shape than is standardly thought. However, once these ‘incompatibilist’ defences are considered in this light, Frankfurt’s argument – qua objection to the view that alternative possibilities are required for acting freely –is left completely intact. Bad news for incompatibilists!
