Filippo Ferrari (Bonn): Is truth Valuable?

Is truth valuable? A variety of philosophers have argued that there is a direct connection between truth and value: in many cases, having true beliefs is a good thing and, overall, a better thing than having false beliefs. This seems hardly disputable. However, as it is customary for many philosophical topics, the question whether truth is valuable requires some elucidations before being adequately addressed. In the first part of the talk I'll clarify the object of our investigation by demarcating matters of value from other normative matters that might be associated with the role of truth in enquiry. In the second part of my talk, I will introduce and critically discuss some fundamental distinctions in value theory which will help us to understand in which sense, if any, is truth valuable. In the last part of the talk, I will develop a pluralist-friendly answer to our initial question, arguing that the extent to which truth is valuable varies in tandem with the subject matter of our enquiry. In so doing, I will suggest a couple of ways to model this pluralist-friendly answer, and I will discuss some of the consequences that these models have with regard to the metaphysics of truth.

Zur Person:

Filippo Ferrari is a Research Fellow in philosophy at the University of Bonn, and member of the DFG-funded project “Disagreement in Philosophy–Conceptual and Semantic Foundations”. Ferrari was awarded his PhD at the University of Aberdeen in 2014, with a thesis on the topic of the normativity of truth and disagreement. He has published articles in a variety of journals including Analysis, Mind, Philosophical Quarterly, Inquiry, Synthese, Canadian Journal of Philosophy.
