Dr. Gömöri Marton (Hungarian Academy of Sciences Budapest): Outline of a Causal Theory of Chance

Research Seminar Theoretical Philosophy

Abstract

The talk will outline a new understanding of objective probability. The main characteristics of the new interpretation are:1) the notion of probability is based on the notion of randomness (and not vice versa); 2) the notion of randomness is defined in terms of the notion of causal independence; 3) the relation of probability and relative frequency is established by the Common Cause Principle; 4) the notions of probability and randomness are compatible with determinism; 5) at the end of the day probability and randomness are things that are eliminable from the ontological map of the world.
