Abstract:

In this talk Markus Werning will develop a Bayesian theory of the meaning of assertions. One of the advantages of this account is that it can explain the interaction between pragmatic and semantic components of meaning.

Speaker:

Markus Werning is an internationally rebnowned cognitive scientist and philosopher of cogni-tive science. He obtained a Dr. phil. from the University of Düsseldorf and held positions at the universities of Erfurt, Düsseldorf and Mainz. He was research scholar at Rutgers Universi-ty and senior fellow at the Center of Advanced Studies in Bielefeld. Markus Werning is cur-rently Professor of Philosophy of Language and Cognition at Ruhr University Bochum. He is editor of the Oxford Handbook of Compositionality and has published numerous articles in frist rate Journals, including Erkenntnis, Synthese, Philosophy of Science, Consciousness and Cognition, Journal of Experimental Psychology, Journal of Semantics, Language and Cogni-tion, Language, Cognition and Neuroscience and Behavioral and Brain Sciences.
