Steffi Schadow

In the academic year 2023/24, Steffi Schadow holds a substitute professorship at the University of Marburg.

In research and teaching, my main focus is on Kant and Hume, as well as on the history of philosophy. Systematically, I am mainly concerned with moral philosophy, meta-ethics, moral psychology, and action theory. In addition, I am interested in contemporary virtue ethics as well as in the analytical discussion on the meaning of life. In my philosophical work, I aim to constructively relate current debates and relevant historical positions in the discussion of fundamental questions of moral philosophy and action theory.

In my current projects, too, I am concerned with this connection between systematic and historical fields of research. In my habilitation project "Morality, Feeling, and Convention. Hume's Theory of Obligation", I defend an interpretation of Hume's conception of moral normativity according to which it combines a sentimentalist approach with an objectivist understanding of moral obligation. As such, it can also account for the particular phenomenology of morality within a naturalistic framework and proves to be a remarkably constructive alternative to strict metaethical grids such as sentimentalism and subjectivism on the one hand and rationalism and objectivism on the other. In another project, a monograph on "Moral Obligation", in engagement with historical and contemporary positions, I develop my own proposal for an understanding of moral obligation that stands in the Kantian tradition.

I teach in the above-mentioned areas, especially in the propaedeutical courses on the history of philosophy and on the foundations of academic work.
